What is Tails Of… ?

Skateboarding isn’t a sport, lifestyle or hobby. Once committed–skateboarding is part of you and no matter what you do or how old you are you still get a rush of dopamine from the sight of a simple red curb. Tails of… is an attempt to capture the depth, complexity and randomness that is skateboarding along with the creative endeavors that surround those who participate in this activity.

No, but really, what is this?

Half art zine and half skate mag with a more mature perspective. Content will strive to be evergreen, so if you pick up a copy, it should be interesting even if it’s three years old. Each issue will have an organizing concept. Each issue will be led by an artist, designer or photographer. They will define the concept and set the direction of the issue overall. Once the theme is set, the contributors will be let loose to create content for that theme. Skateboarders who are also artists, writers, photographers, historians, inventors and madmen will be invited to help.

How will this work?

People don’t buy magazines anymore, do they? They still exist–someone must care. I care, so yeah, let’s figure this out. Money will be needed, but before that let’s talk distribution. Tails of… is for skateboarders and the core of skateboarding is the skate shop. Real skate shops will be given free ads in Tails of… and they will also serve as the distribution channel. Each shop will receive free copies of each issue and they can give them away, sell them or whatever they like – but hopefully they put them into the hands of skateboarders.

When & Where

#0 dropped in the Fall of 2020 and the second book, called #1, curated by Rich Jacobs, was released in July 2021. #2 hit shops in March of 2022. #3, came out in September, 2022. Issue #4 took way longer than expected but dropped in November of 2023. The Availability is always limited so if you want the current issue, subscribe now. It will be available in a few of the finest skate shops, but they do go quickly. Check @tailsofskateboarding for shop updates. Take a look at our current shop list to see if your local shop might get some. If they aren’t on the list, bug them to reach out to us.

I’m not sure. We’re taking this as it comes–we don’t know what’s next. Hopefully, you can get your hands on a copy of Tails Of… and come along for the ride.
